Mathilde Courtois is the Herbert Smith Freehills 2023 laureate. She is currently studying for an LLM at King's College London.
I did a degree in public law and a university diploma in law and political science at the Catholic University of Lyon. I was fascinated by European economic issues and decided to study European business law. I joined the Master 1 in European Business Law at the Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3 and then the Master 2 in European Business and Competition Law at the Université Paris II Panthéon Assas.
Throughout my career, I have been involved in a variety of voluntary activities. After serving as Vice-President of the Lyon European Law Association, I was appointed General Secretary of the European Law Business Lawyers Association. Sensitive to environmental challenges, I have also taken part in a number of voluntary missions.
To deepen my understanding of European competition law from an institutional perspective, I did an internship at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Competition. With my sights set on becoming a competition lawyer, I completed a traineeship at Squire Patton Boggs, in Competition/Antitrust/FDI, before sitting the CRFPA exam in September.
Joining the LLM at King's College London in September is perfectly in line with my efforts to achieve my career goals. Its background in competition law offers an in-depth and diversified training, with an international approach, which makes it an obvious choice to continue my training. And the Entente Cordiale - Herbert Smith Freehills Scholarship is enabling me to make this project a reality!
