The British Council launches a new app LearnEnglish Kids: Playtime to help children build confidence and ability in speaking and listening in English.

Over 50 quality video songs and stories for children to learn English (available on iOS).

The British Council is launching the new LearnEnglish Kids: Playtime app to help children aged 6-11 build confidence in English speaking and listening skills and develop spelling and vocabulary, in a safe fun child friendly environment with a place for parents to monitor progress with an interface in French.

Playtime is primarily focused on improving listening skills, the app includes over 50 quality animated songs and stories grouped into popular themes such as Fairy Tales, British Tales and classic Children’s Songs. Each video comes with an engaging listen–and-record activity to encourage children to speak, as well as challenging games to improve understanding and spelling of vocabulary from the videos.

The British Council has an expert team of highly skilled Young Learner mobile consultants, who are experienced and qualified Teachers. The LearnEnglish team is dedicated to designing and developing high quality apps for learning English, that integrate (academic) gaming methodology to support learning in a way that enables children to explore, activate and develop their English via interactive listen-and-record activities linked to the video content, encouraging children to experiment with their pronunciation of the new words presented by the narrator.

The Playtime app also features a secure Parent Area where parents can monitor their child’s progress across the 4 main fun study areas; video, speaking, spelling and comprehension and view the 4 progress reports. The Parent Area is restricted via a parental lock, enabling parents to safely manage in-app purchases and their access to social media

The LearnEnglish Kids: Playtime app is available on iOS tablets and phones. The app is free to download with 20 videos included. Additional videos are available through in-app purchasing or monthly subscription. More animated songs and stories will be added in the future.

As the world’s leader in English expertise, the British Council offers a collection of 13 apps written by English teachers and language experts to help learners of all ages practise and improve their English. The British Council’s apps have had over 9 million downloads to date and cover a wide range of English learning areas including grammar, vocabulary and listening practice. About the British Council

The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We create international opportunities for the people of the UK and other countries and build trust between them worldwide.

We work in more than 100 countries and our 8,000 staff – including 2,000 teachers – work with thousands of professionals and policy makers and millions of young people every year by teaching English, sharing the arts and delivering education and society programmes.

We are a UK charity governed by Royal Charter. A core publicly-funded grant provides 20 per cent of our turnover which last year was £864 million. The rest of our revenues are earned from services which customers around the world pay for, such as English classes and taking UK examinations, and also through education and development contracts and from partnerships with public and private organisations. All our work is in pursuit of our charitable purpose and supports prosperity and security for the UK and globally.
